Have you ever noticed that we tend to define our lives by our lowest moments?
We say things like, “That was the worst year of my life,” or “Everything fell apart after that.” We remember the diagnosis, the divorce, the bankruptcy, the lost job, the broken relationship, or the day our plans came crashing down.
We call it rock bottom because it feels like there’s nowhere left to fall.
I’ve come to believe something different.
Sometimes rock bottom isn’t where our story ends. Sometimes it’s where God begins writing a new chapter.
The Bible is filled with people who reached what looked like the end of the road.
Joseph sat in a prison cell after doing the right thing.
Moses spent decades in the wilderness after fleeing Egypt.
Naomi lost her husband and her sons before she ever saw redemption.
Peter denied Jesus three times on the very night He needed him most.
If you had stopped reading their stories in those moments, you would have thought they were finished.
But God wasn’t finished.
He rarely is.
One of the hardest lessons to learn is that God’s timeline is often very different from ours. We want immediate answers, immediate healing, immediate direction. We pray today and hope tomorrow looks completely different.
Instead, God often works through ordinary days.
A conversation.
A new opportunity.
A lesson learned through hardship.
A quiet conviction during prayer.
One small step that doesn’t seem important until months or years later.
Looking back, those tiny moments often become the stepping stones that led us somewhere we never expected.
Hope doesn’t mean pretending life is easy.
Hope doesn’t ignore pain.
Hope doesn’t deny that some days are incredibly difficult.
Biblical hope is confidence that God is still present even when our circumstances haven’t changed.
It’s waking up one more morning and choosing to believe that your current chapter is not the final chapter.
It’s opening your Bible when you don’t feel like it.
It’s saying another prayer when yesterday’s prayer seemed to go unanswered.
It’s choosing faith over despair one day at a time.
Sometimes that’s all God asks of us.
Jesus never promised His followers an easy road.
In fact, He warned us that we would face trouble in this world. Yet in that same breath, He reminded us that He had overcome the world.
Our confidence isn’t found in comfortable circumstances.
It’s found in the One who walks beside us through every circumstance.
If you find yourself at rock bottom today, let me encourage you with this:
You are not forgotten.
You are not beyond redemption.
You are not too broken for God to use.
Your failures do not surprise Him.
Your questions do not scare Him.
Your circumstances do not limit Him.
Sometimes God rebuilds our lives the same way a craftsman builds a house: one piece at a time.
The process can feel painfully slow.
You may wonder if anything is happening at all.
But every prayer, every act of obedience, every decision to trust Him instead of giving up is another brick in a foundation that will eventually support something far stronger than what stood before.
One day you’ll look back and realize that what felt like the darkest season of your life was also the season that taught you to depend on God more than ever before.
That doesn’t make the pain good.
It doesn’t erase the hurt.
But it does remind us that God has a remarkable ability to bring beauty from brokenness.
So if today feels like rock bottom, don’t mistake it for the end.
Keep praying.
Keep trusting.
Keep taking the next step, no matter how small it seems.
Because as long as God is writing your story, there is always hope beyond rock bottom.
Scripture to Reflect On
2 Corinthians 4:8-9
Take a few moments today to read 2 Corinthians 4:8-9. As you read, remember that Paul wasn’t writing from a life of comfort. He wrote those words after enduring hardship, persecution, and uncertainty. Yet through it all, he had learned that God’s faithfulness was greater than his circumstances.
If your life feels heavy right now, spend some time in prayer after reading this passage. Ask God for the strength to take the next step, even if you can’t yet see where the road leads.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
When life feels overwhelming and hope seems distant, remind me that You are still at work. Help me to trust You when I can’t see the outcome and to keep walking by faith instead of fear. Give me strength for today, wisdom for tomorrow, and peace that only You can provide.
Thank You for never abandoning Your children, even in the darkest valleys. Help me remember that my story is still being written, and that You are a God who brings hope, healing, and redemption.
